With the conclusion of the Safety 2018 Professional Development Conference & Exposition, attendees have walked away with the latest trends and knowledge in the occupational, safety and health industry. In the event you were not able to attend, or could not make it to every panel, here is a recap of the highlights to come out of Safety 2018.
New Name, Same Mission
Safety 2018 marked the official name change of the organization behind the conference. The American Society of Safety Engineers is now the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), resulting in a modified logo and redesigned website. The new name better reflects ASSP’s membership while continuing its goal to provide professionals with the latest safety advancements.
A Summit on Workplace Violence and Active Shooters
One of the many panels at Safety 2018 featured experts from the FBI to discuss how to reduce risks of workplace violence and active shooters. In the wake of the active shooter epidemic, it is important for safety professionals and employers to be prepared. The panel emphasized that knowing what to do in an active shooter situation can save lives, since there are usually few clues leading up to an incident.
Behavior Based Safety Town Hall debate
Last year at Safety 2017, a Plenary Town Hall debate resulted in a heated discussion on the history of behavior-based safety and how it compares to human and organizational performance. This year safety executives from Tesla Motors, Cargill, and Goodyear joined safety professionals to continue the conversation on how the two approaches can prevent serious injuries and fatalities.
A Test of Identifying Hazards
While Safety 2018 dealt with many serious issues to prevent workplace injuries, that doesn’t mean there can’t be some fun between the panels. A Safety Escape Room allowed attendees to participate in a physical game of solving puzzles and testing their hazard analysis skills to exit a room of OSHA’s nightmares. Teams had limited time to spot the hazards and unveil the secrets of the room, with those who escaped the fastest having their time displayed on the “Brag Board”.
A Stacked Show Floor
Throughout the conference, safety professionals had the opportunity to browse the exposition show floor of over 600 exhibitors offering realistic solutions to their safety needs. IndustrySafe was in attendance, offering attendees a live demo of our safety software on the show floor. It was a pleasure meeting all the safety professionals interested in improving their safety measures.
Every year ASSP provides safety professionals the opportunity to stay up-to-date on the latest safety trends and news through their annual Safety Conference. IndustrySafe has been an exhibitor at ASSP for several years and has always gained invaluable knowledge during our attendance. We look forward to attending Safety 2019 next year in New Orleans.
