The Virginia Fire Chiefs Foundation’s “Best Practices in Fire Service Health and Safety Award” was presented to IndustrySafe customer, Alexandria Fire Department last week during the 2016 Virginia Fire and Rescue Conference.

Jeffrey Merryman, Deputy Chief of Health, Safety & Risk Management, nominated his department for the award based on his team's successful implementation of IndustrySafe Safety Management Software to track and trend their safety data.

In addition to utilizing the IndustrySafe software to improve safety, Alexandria Fire Department has also established an Incident Review Board made up from all ranks and sections of the department, allowing for a peer review of all incidents, including near misses, accidents and injuries.

Alexandria’s safety management and preventive efforts were financially obvious when the department’s Workers Compensation incurred expenses were reduced from $2.1 million in fiscal year 2011 to $247,304 in fiscal year 2014.

“[IndustrySafe] has allowed our department to gather data and completely revolutionized how we store and analyze this safety related data,” said Merryman.

Merryman, a 30-year veteran of Alexandria Fire Department, serves on the Fire Department Safety Officers Association’s Board of Directors and serves as the chairperson of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Fire Chiefs- Health and Safety Subcommittee. Merryman also holds Pro Board certification via the FDSOA for Incident Safety Officer and Health & Safety Officer.

As a result of Alexandria Fire Department's commitment to sharing best practices with other state emergency service departments, IndustrySafe has also been purchased and implemented by the City of Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department and Loudoun County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services.

Alexandria Fire Department employs more than 250 firefighters, paramedics, fire prevention staff and administrative support personnel. A network of ten stations protects 15 square miles and responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service annually.
