In 2013, the Alexandria Virginia Fire Department adopted IndustrySafe Safety Management Software to improve their safety practices and reduce incidents. Since then they have become no stranger to Health and Safety awards. Last year the Virginia Fire Chiefs Foundation presented its “Best Practices in Fire Service Health and Safety Award” to the department during the 2016 Virginia Fire and Rescue Conference.
On Wednesday, July 26, the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Safety, Health & Survival Section presented the Alan Brunacini Fire Service Executive Safety Award to Alexandria Fire Department’s Deputy Chief, Jeffrey Merryman! The award is presented annually to the chief executive officer of a fire department that has demonstrated a unique commitment to fire service health and safety.
Merryman, a 30-year veteran at the Alexandria Fire Department, was able to turn a single-person Health, Safety and Risk management unit into a whole agency that writes policies and collaborates with representatives from the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) Program and the City of Alexandria. Additionally, Merryman led the investigation of a tragic Line of Duty Death in hopes of preventing future incidents. His process for this investigation now serves as a model that is used throughout private and public sectors.
The Alexandria Fire Department employs more than 250 firefighters, paramedics, fire prevention staff, and administrative support personnel. Their network of 10 stations protects nearly 16 square miles, and responds to approximately 20,000 calls for service annually.
With Merryman’s dedication and hard work (and some help from IndustrySafe), the Alexandria Fire Department established an Incident Review Board to allow for a peer review of all incidents, and were able to reduce their Workers’ Compensation expenses from $2.1 million to $247,304 in three years.
Everyone here at IndustrySafe is proud to be able to assist Deputy Chief Merryman in his commitment to continually improve safety, and offer a big congratulations to Jeffrey for this honor!
